Fronsac & Canon-Fronsac

Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac lie on the right bank of the Dordogne west of Libourne, close to the confluence of the Dordogne and the Isle. They are two separate appellations; Canon-Fronsac covers the best slopes around Fronsac and Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac, while Fronsac takes in the wider area with seven communes, including Saillans, La Rivière and Galgon. Unlike the flat Médoc, a rolling hill relief defines the landscape here. In the 18th century the name was well established in Paris and at court thanks to the Duke of Richelieu.

The bedrock is limestone plateau and the molasse du Fronsadais, a mix of clay, chalk and sand. The slopes fall towards the river with varied exposures, which helps drainage and ripening. The climate is oceanic, with mild winters and rain throughout the year; the Dordogne and the Isle temper temperature extremes.

Merlot is the main variety, complemented by Cabernet Franc, some Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The reds are powerful and dark-fruited with firm tannins; they are regarded as somewhat sturdier than those of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion and often need several years in bottle. Well-known estates in Saillans include Château Fontenil and Château Dalem.
