Who is behind Cellarmap

Cellarmap is my project. I love wine and everything that comes with it: the landscapes, the people, the cellars, the conversation at the table. I live in Heidelberg, right between the Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Baden and the Hessische Bergstraße, and for years I kept running into the same problem: anyone who wants to visit a winery or understand a wine finds the answers scattered across books, association websites and databases, but never in one place.
The real trigger was a very practical problem: a free Saturday, an appetite for three or four wineries, and no idea which ones are nearby, when they are open and how to plan the day sensibly. Out of that frustration the wine trip planner was born. It solved exactly that pain for me, and I still use it myself. That it now helps others too is the best feedback I could ask for.
Cellarmap is not a publishing product and not an agency site. It is the atlas I wish I had had myself.
How we work
Cellarmap is editorially run by me and built with the help of data analysis and AI-assisted research. In practice that means:
- Sources first. Every winery profile is built from the winery's own website, Wikipedia and association or classification lists. The sources used are listed at the bottom of each profile.
- Checked, not just generated. Texts are checked against their sources before they go live. Whatever cannot be verified stays empty.
- Wineries have the final say. Verified wineries maintain opening hours, visitor information and contact details themselves, marked “Confirmed by the winery”.
- Independent. The Renomée score and all rankings cannot be bought. Pro plans for wineries do not influence them.
- Spotted an error? Tell us. Via the correction link on every page, the contact form or directly at hello@cellarmap.wine.
Our principles
- 1Transparency. Every score, every classification is transparently documented. No black box.
- 2Clarity. We translate jargon into tangible language. No sommelier snobbery.
- 3Independence. We accept no money from wineries for better ratings. Period.
- 4Open data. OSM geocoordinates, public VDP/AOC classifications, Wikipedia, professional literature — we build on verifiable sources.
- 5Humility. We make mistakes, have gaps, develop bias. Tell us — we'll correct.
