Gently to moderately sloping south-facing hills between Geisenheim and Oestrich-Winkel, rising from the Rhine bank to the Taunus edge. Johannisberg, Rothenberg, Lenchen and Hasensprung lie at different altitudes; the Hasensprung starts at the eastern edge of Johannisberg.

Wine Character

Between Geisenheim and Oestrich-Winkel lies the central Rheingau on the north bank of the Rhine, at the foot of the Taunus. Geisenheim is a university town: the research institute for viticulture and horticulture was founded in 1872 and became part of Hochschule Geisenheim. In Johannisberg the 50th parallel runs through the vineyards of Schloss Johannisberg.

The sites lie on terraces above the Rhine. The soils consist of loess and loam, in places of marl or weathered quartzite. The Taunus slows cold winds and the Rhine stores heat, so grapes ripen evenly and rarely suffer frost.

Riesling is the main variety, with Spätburgunder alongside. According to tradition, Spätlese was discovered at Schloss Johannisberg in 1775. Well-known sites include the Geisenheimer Rothenberg and the Winkeler Hasensprung. Producers include Schloss Vollrads in Winkel and Peter Jakob Kühn and Wegeler in Oestrich.
