Loambody-rich, velvety

Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.

CLIMATE · Warm · Dry · Sunny

Warm, sunny microclimate where the Rhine breaks through the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Slate stores heat, the river provides reflected light; day-night swings are marked.

TOPOGRAPHY · steep

The Rüdesheimer Berg consists of four steep south-facing sites: Rottland, Roseneck, Schlossberg and Kaisersteinfels. Roseneck climbs to around 233 metres. The Höllenberg in Assmannshausen lies in a side valley, the Eichbachtal, and is around 45 per cent steep.

Wine Character

Rüdesheim and Lorch lie at the western end of the Rheingau, where the Rhine passes from the basin into the narrow gorge of the Middle Rhine. As early as the 11th century, under Archbishop Bardo, viticulture in Rüdesheim was systematically promoted. Lorch lies at the mouth of the Wisper, and Assmannshausen is a district of Rüdesheim.

The steep sites stand on Devonian slate with quartzite, stony and heat-retaining. The wide Rhine reflects light onto the slopes, and the vines ripen well. Day-night temperature differences are marked and the soils dry quickly.

Riesling dominates; in Assmannshausen Spätburgunder is grown. The Rüdesheimer Berg is divided into the sites Schlossberg, Roseneck and Rottland. In Lorch, Schlossberg (53 hectares), Kapellenberg (58 hectares), Krone and Pfaffenwies are among the important sites. A well-known estate in Rüdesheim is Leitz.

Soil Type

Devonian slate, quartzite; very warm due to south-facing exposure and Rhine reflection

Climate

Warm and steep; slate sites store daytime heat; pronounced day-night temperature variation
