Busuioacă de Bohotin comes from the village of Bohotin in the commune of Răducăneni in Iași county in Moldavia. The berries are violet-reddish; they yield a rosé or pale red wine. The variety is regarded as a Muscat type (Muscat rose à petits grains). It is grown in only four wine regions: Bohotin near Iași, Huși, Pietroasa and Tohani. Together they total about 100 hectares, which is why authentic Busuioacă de Bohotin is rare.
The wine has a distinctive body and an unmistakable scent of rose and basil. Honeysuckle and ripe peach are also named, along with a balanced sweetness, alcohol and acidity; occasionally a subtle almond bitterness shows on the finish. It is mostly made medium-dry to sweet and suits young drinking.
Busuioacă de Bohotin pairs with fruit desserts, strawberries and light pastries; well chilled it is an aperitif.
