Fetească Regală is the most planted grape in Romania. It is a natural cross of Fetească Albă and Grasă de Cotnari and was discovered at Daneș in Mureș county in Transylvania, in 1930 by the dating used here. In Hungary it is called Királyleányka. Main areas are Transylvania and western Moldavia; further plantings exist in the Republic of Moldova, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria. Among the atlas regions it stands practically everywhere, from Transylvania and Moldavia through Muntenia, Oltenia and Banat to Crișana, Dobrogea, the Danube Terraces and the southern sandy soils.
The wines range from simple table wines to quality wines. They are dry, fresh and citrus-driven, with floral notes and lively acidity. The variety is also a common base for sparkling wine.
