Goldriesling

Rare variety · small plantings

Also known as: Riesling Doré, Goldmuskat

Riesling crossing bred in 1893 in Colmar, Alsace; rare today and found mainly in Saxony, with a muscat tone and fresh acidity.

Portrait

Goldriesling was bred in 1893 by Christian Oberlin in Colmar, Alsace, by crossing Riesling with a second variety; Courtillier Musqué Précoce is suspected as the partner, but this is not confirmed. The variety is listed as an approved German grape and is concentrated in Saxony, where it covered only 17 hectares according to figures for 2008. Other names are Riesling Doré and Goldmuskat.

The vine ripens early and carries muscat-like aromas with high acidity, which gives it relevance for cool marginal sites such as Saxony. The wine is light and fresh with a delicate muscat tone. Today Goldriesling counts among the rare varieties; its cultivation in Saxony is an example of historic new crossings that have survived in individual regions.

Goldriesling goes with starters, salads, light cooking and pastries and is drunk young.
