Lemberger, called Blaufränkisch in Austria, is a Central European red variety that arose from a cross of Blaue Zimmettraube and Weißer Heunisch. The German name refers to Lower Styria (Lemberg); in Württemberg it has been grown since the 18th century and is regarded as one of the leading varieties. There are also smaller plantings in Pfalz and Baden.
The vine buds late, ripens late and needs warm sites, best on Keuper, Muschelkalk or clay soils. It is vigorous and frost-hardy, but at high yields wines turn green and harsh. Top wines show dark berry fruit, spice and marked acidity with strong yet fine-grained tannins.
Lemberger is often aged in large oak casks or barriques, can mature for several years and pairs with game, roast beef, hearty sausage dishes and spicy cheese.
