An old Vrancea variety from Panciu and Odobești: neutral, light, crisp – the traditional sparkling base of the Panciu cellars.

Plăvaie, also called Plăvană, is a native grape of Vrancea in Romanian Moldavia, grown there for centuries. It was formerly widespread in the vineyards between the Carpathians and the Dniester, with large plantings in the Panciu area. In other countries such as Ukraine, Slovakia, Serbia, Hungary, Austria and Bulgaria it is grown under other names. Its parentage is not documented.
The vine is self-fertile and vigorous, the bunches very compact and 16 to 18 cm long, with greenish-yellow, rust-speckled berries. The wine is light and dry, at 9 to 10 % alcohol and an acidity of 4 to 5 g/l, yellow-green with a discreet aroma. It is a table wine drunk in its first year. The variety also suits as a base wine for sparkling, which ties it to the sparkling-wine tradition of Panciu, and for distillates.
