Teremia Mare

Teremia Mare and Jamu Mare lie in Timiș County in western Romania, on the Banat plain near the Serbian border. The villages have a Swabian character, as Danube Swabians were settled in the Banat in the 18th century. The podgorie is the home of the Creață variety, also known as Banat Riesling.

The climate is warm and the landscape flat. The soils are sand and black earth; the sandy soils are permeable, the black earth is humus-rich and retains water. Vines here traditionally stood on the light soils of the plain.

Fetească Regală, Riesling Italico and Creață were grown, along with Merlot and the red variety Cadarcă. The once famous vineyards, home of the 'Coniac de Teremia' brandy, have largely disappeared over the last 25 years. Today it is mainly a viticulture museum in the village that recalls the tradition; winegrowing now plays only a minor role.
