Wine Character
Lalande-de-Pomerol lies on the right bank of the Dordogne north of Pomerol, from which it is separated by the Barbanne stream. The appellation comprises the communes of Lalande-de-Pomerol and Néac, near Libourne. The vineyards lie on gentle slopes and plateaus of gravel, sand and clay and appear less contiguous than in Pomerol, as vineyards alternate with meadows and woodland.
The soils vary: in Néac clay and gravel lie as in neighbouring Pomerol, while Lalande has sandier soils. The climate is oceanic and mild, with rain throughout the year; the Dordogne tempers extremes.
Merlot is the dominant variety, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are close to Pomerol in style: round, fruit-driven and with soft tannins, but usually less concentrated and earlier drinking. Well-known estates include Château La Fleur de Boüard, Les Cruzelles and Siaurac. The appellation covers over 1,100 hectares and thus has a considerably larger vineyard area than Pomerol.
