Wine Character
Listrac-Médoc and Moulis-en-Médoc are two neighbouring appellations in the Haut-Médoc, in the hinterland west of the Gironde and of the communes of Margaux and Saint-Julien. Unlike these, they do not lie on the river but further inland, closer to the pine forest of the Landes. Listrac, at 43 metres, is the highest point of the Médoc; Moulis is smaller, and its best site is the Grand Poujeaux plateau.
The soil varies: in Moulis gravel with some clay and limestone prevails; in Listrac a patchwork of gravel and clay soils lies over a clay-limestone subsoil, favouring the higher share of Merlot. Because of the greater distance from the Gironde, the river's moderating influence is weaker.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot define the wines, supplemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Moulis produces fine, spicy wines with clear fruit; Listrac is regarded as more powerful and austere. Well-known estates include Chasse-Spleen, Poujeaux and Maucaillou in Moulis, and Clarke, Fonréaud and Fourcas Hosten in Listrac.
