Wine Character
The Mâconnais is Burgundy's southernmost region and has the largest planted area – about 6,700 hectares. Chardonnay dominates here, particularly outstanding in the appellations Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Vinzelles, Saint-Véran and Viré-Clessé. The region borders Beaujolais directly to the south.
Pouilly-Fuissé was upgraded with its own Premier Crus in 2020 – the first 22 climats received the status. The climate is noticeably warmer than the Côte d'Or, yielding Chardonnays with more body and tropical fruit notes. Top estates: Domaine Leflaive (Mâcon-Verzé), J.A. Ferret, Domaine Guffens-Heynen, Daniel Barraud.
