Greaca lies in the far south-east of Giurgiu County in Muntenia, on the left bank of the Danube, at the border with Călărași County. Besides Greaca, the podgorie includes Zimnicea, Giurgiu and Fetești. The area belongs to the Danube terraces, flat to gently undulating land that falls away towards the Danube in southern Romania.
The climate is hot and dry, with very warm summers and low rainfall. The soils are loess and sand, which warm quickly and hold water only to a limited degree. Early-ripening varieties do well here, and yields depend heavily on water supply.
Historically, mainly table grapes were grown here. Today simple white and red wines are made from Fetească Regală, Riesling Italico, Muscat Ottonel and Merlot. The wines are mostly light and intended for regional consumption; Muscat Ottonel yields aromatic whites. The podgorie is today of regional rather than national importance.
