In the rain shadow of the Vosges: warm summers and cool nights give fresh, elegant wines. As elsewhere in Alsace, vineyards lie at 200 to 400 metres at the foot of the mountains.

Wine Character
The northern section of the Route des Vins in the Bas-Rhin département runs from Marlenheim via Molsheim, Rosheim and Obernai to Barr. The vineyards lie at the foot of the Vosges on hills that fall towards the Rhine plain. The grands crus of the zone are Steinklotz near Marlenheim, Altenberg de Bergbieten, Bruderthal in Molsheim, Engelberg, Altenberg de Wolxheim and Kirchberg de Barr.
The geology is varied: Muschelkalk, marl and Buntsandstein often alternate over short distances. The Vosges hold back part of the rain from the west, and the climate is semi-continental; the wines ripen somewhat later than in southern Alsace. Pinot Noir is also grown near Ottrott, inland from Obernai.
Riesling and Gewürztraminer yield powerful, structured wines here, with Pinot Gris and Sylvaner as well as red Pinot Noir, above all at Ottrott.
