Terroir & Climate

Wine Character

The Mainviereck, or Main quadrangle, is the stretch where the Main describes a rectangular bend around the Spessart and Odenwald between Aschaffenburg and Wertheim. The vineyards lie along the river valley near Klingenberg, Großheubach, Miltenberg, Bürgstadt and Kreuzwertheim. The Klingenberger Schlossberg, the Bürgstadter Centgrafenberg and the Homburger Kallmuth are well-known sites; Klingenberg and Homburg show terraced steep slopes.

Red Buntsandstein (red sandstone) predominates; weathering into easily warmed, mineral soils, it shapes the red wines at the Centgrafenberg and Schlossberg, while shell-limestone terraces occur at the Kallmuth. The climate is considered milder than in the rest of Franconia because the Spessart and Odenwald shelter the valley and the Main stores heat.

This is Franconia's red-wine country: Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder yield cool, silky, delicately fruited wines. Silvaner, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau stand mainly on the limestone slopes. The Rudolf Fürst estate in Bürgstadt is regarded as one of Germany's leading Spätburgunder producers.
