Heppenheim lies at the foot of the Odenwald in the south of the Hessische Bergstraße, near the border with Baden-Württemberg. With about 180 hectares of vineyards, the town is the region's largest wine municipality. The ruined Starkenburg castle rises above the old town.
The slopes run as terraces along the edge of the Odenwald, open to the south and southwest. The Odenwald shields against westerly weather, and the climate is mild. The soils consist of loess loam, weathered granite and Buntsandstein.
Riesling comes first, followed by Spätburgunder and Burgundian varieties. Sites in the Heppenheimer Schloßberg group include Centgericht, Stemmler, Steinkopf, Maiberg and Eckweg. The Centgericht is about 17 hectares and is farmed by the Hessian State Wineries; the Stemmler, at about 105 hectares, is the largest site. Producers include the Bergsträßer Winzer eG and Weingut Freiberger.
