Wine Character
Zwingenberg is regarded as the oldest town on the Hessische Bergstraße and received town rights in 1274. The old town lies at the foot of the Melibokus, which at 517 metres is the highest mountain of the Bergstraße. The vineyards rise directly behind the town, sheltered by the Odenwald and open to the west towards the Rhine plain.
The Steingeröll and Alte Burg sites lie on weathered granite covered by a layer of loess loam that supplies water and nutrients. Both are among the steepest sites on the Bergstraße. The climate is mild.
Riesling comes first, with Spätburgunder alongside. The Zwingenberger Steingeröll and Alte Burg belong to the Auerbacher Rott collective site. Weingut Simon-Bürkle in Zwingenberg farms about 11 hectares, including the Steingeröll, the Alte Burg, the neighbouring Alsbacher Schöntal and the Auerbacher Höllberg.
