Obermosel

The Obermosel (Upper Moselle) lies in the far southwest of the Mosel wine region, where the river forms the border between Germany and Luxembourg over a stretch of around 45 kilometres between the Saar confluence at Konz and the tripoint near Perl. Wine villages include Nittel and Wincheringen; opposite, on the Luxembourg side, lie places such as Wormeldange and Remich.

The bedrock differs from the rest of the Mosel: instead of slate there are Muschelkalk and Buntsandstein, as on the Luxembourg side. The soils are calcareous and moderately stony. The climate is cool continental; the wines ripen later and keep a lively acidity.

The Obermosel is the home of Elbling, one of Europe's oldest grape varieties, grown in the region since Roman times. Elbling yields light, fresh, acid-driven wines and is also made into growers' sparkling wine. Müller-Thurgau and Riesling stand alongside.
