Cool hill climate in the highest sites of the Langhe system. Nights are markedly cooler, ripening is slow, and autumn often brings fog. Grapes reach moderate sugar levels with high acidity, ideal for classic-method sparkling wine.

Wine Character
The Alta Langa comprises the higher, southern hills of the Langhe and adjoining zones in the provinces of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria, towards the Ligurian Apennines. The vineyards lie from 250 metres upwards, partly above 600 metres, in a wooded, sparsely settled landscape where hazelnut trees and meadows interrupt the vineyards. The Alta Langa DOCG was created in 2011 and is reserved for traditional-method sparkling wine.
The soils consist of calcareous marls and Miocene sandstones. The climate is cooler than in the Barolo area, with marked temperature differences between day and night and sometimes foggy autumns. The higher elevation preserves the acidity that is crucial for sparkling base wines.
Pinot Nero and Chardonnay are permitted; the wines must age at least 30 months and are vintage sparkling wines. They are finely beaded and fresh, showing brioche and citrus notes. Well-known houses connected to the area include Gancia and Contratto in Canelli.
