Marlbalanced, structured
Marl is a mix of limestone and clay — yields structured, balanced wines with acidity backbone.
Sandaromatic, approachable
Loose sand and wind-blown sand warm up quickly and hold little water — they give aromatic, early-drinking wines with soft tannins; phylloxera-resistant.

Limestone delivers tension, structure and a cooler, more mineral character.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Continental climate with warm summers, cool nights and open, well-ventilated hills. Moscato Bianco ripens early to mid-season and retains freshness and aroma thanks to the cool nights. Fog is frequent in autumn.
TOPOGRAPHY · gentle
Wide, gentle hills around the town of Asti, with vineyards roughly between 200 and 450 metres; the higher sites towards Santo Stefano Belbo and Castiglione Tinella are considered particularly favourable for Moscato. The relief is more open than in the Langhe.

Wine Character
The Asti wine zone lies in the hills of the Monferrato around the city of Asti, along the Tanaro and Belbo rivers. The core of Moscato production is concentrated in the communes around Canelli and Santo Stefano Belbo; parts of the landscape belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato. The vineyards run in dense rows across ridges and valleys.
The soils consist of Tertiary marls and sands, partly calcareous and clayey. The climate is continental, with hot summers, cold winters and frequent fog in autumn; the south-facing slopes offer favourable ripening conditions for the aromatic varieties.
Asti DOCG and Moscato d'Asti DOCG are made from Moscato Bianco: Asti is fully sparkling and sweet, Moscato d'Asti lightly fizzy, low in alcohol and fruity. The sparkling wine is usually made by the Martinotti tank method. Alongside, the area produces robust reds as Barbera d'Asti DOCG.
