Wine Character

Nicorești lies in Galați County in eastern Romania, on the Siret river. The podgorie is in Moldavia, on slopes and terraces in the Siret valley, where wine has been grown for centuries. Nicorești is regarded as the classic home of the Băbească Neagră variety.

The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters. The soils are sand, loess and gravel; the permeable sites warm quickly. The Siret valley favours cool nights, so the wines keep their acidity.

Băbească Neagră yields pale, fresh reds with cherry fruit and marked acidity; for centuries they were Moldavia's everyday reds. Fetească Neagră and Merlot are also grown for more powerful reds, and Fetească Regală for white wine. The traditional wines are light, low in tannin and meant to be drunk young. The cultivation of Băbească Neagră is closely tied here to the region's rural winegrowing tradition.
