Wine Character
Manjimup lies in the south-west of Western Australia, in the karri forest region north of Pemberton. The vineyards are at elevations of roughly 100 to 350 metres, among forests of karri eucalyptus, a tree species native to this region. Manjimup has been recognised as a geographical indication (GI) since 2006.
The climate is cool temperate, with cold, wet winters and high rainfall. The region lies further inland and is somewhat more continental than Pemberton to the south. The soils are gravelly loam, red karri loam and granite-derived soils, which slow ripening and retain acidity.
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are grown, as in neighbouring Pemberton, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Pinot Noir is regarded as the area's flagship, with fine structure; the Chardonnays are elegant and mineral. The wines are fresh and structured overall.
