Wine Character

The Lake Constance wine areas of Württemberg extend from Kressbronn and Langenargen on the north-eastern shore of the lake. They are followed by the Bavarian lakeside area with Nonnenhorn, Wasserburg and Lindau, which under wine law also belongs to Württemberg. The vineyards lie on terraces and slopes above the lake, often among orchards; in clear weather the view reaches the Alps. The best-known site is the Nonnenhorner Seehalde.

Lake Constance acts as a heat store: it softens spring frosts and extends the ripening period in autumn. The soils are moraine deposits of the Rhine glacier, consisting of gravel, sand and loam; they drain well and warm up quickly. Humidity is high, and autumn fog occurs.

Müller-Thurgau (here also called Rivaner) is the most important variety, along with Bacchus, Kerner and Spätburgunder, which is often made as Weißherbst rosé. The wines are light, fresh and fruity, with moderate alcohol. Viticulture here is small-scale and complements the region's fruit and hop growing.
