Middle Nahe: smoky, mineral Rieslings from porphyry and melaphyre, among Germany's longest-lived.
Climate, site & wine
Volcanic porphyry and melaphyre, plus slate and coloured Rotliegend rock, determine the soils; the Rotenfels consists of rhyolite. The soils are lean, store heat and give Riesling a mineral imprint with robust fruit.
The Rieslings show peach, citrus, smoke and a saline, stony structure; they are taut, with tension and high ageing potential. The Mittlere Nahe is regarded as the core zone of Nahe Riesling.

Warm, dry climate in the narrow, sheltered valley. Heat-storing rock radiates warmth, while cool night air from the valley creates large day-night swings. Ripening is mid to late, and acidity stays high.
TOPOGRAPHY · steep
Steep terraces below porphyry cliffs between Schlossböckelheim and Norheim, with sites such as Felsenberg and Kupfergrube (Schlossböckelheim), Hermannshöhle (Niederhausen) and Dellchen (Norheim). Slopes face mainly south and fall towards the Nahe; downstream at Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg the Rotenfels rises as the highest sheer rock face north of the Alps.
