Peel — smaller coastal region south of Perth, nice varietal diversity.
Climate, site & wine
Along the coast the soils are permeable tuart sands, in places over limestone, with loams and gravelly soils inland. They hold little water and keep vigour low.
Shiraz is the longest-established and most successful variety and tends towards medium-bodied reds with fine tannin; alongside it grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Verdelho, the latter with lively acidity and tropical fruit.

Sandaromatic, approachable
Loose sand and wind-blown sand warm up quickly and hold little water — they give aromatic, early-drinking wines with soft tannins; phylloxera-resistant.
Gravel / Sandlight, approachable
Gravel and sand drain heavily — vines struggle for water, wines turn fine, light and elegant.
Loambody-rich, velvety
Loamy soils give wines volume and a soft, velvety mouthfeel.
CLIMATE · Mediterranean
Mediterranean coastal climate with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The Indian Ocean shapes the region with sea breezes that cool the afternoons. Ripening is early to mid-season.
TOPOGRAPHY · gentle
Flat coastal plain (Swan Coastal Plain) about 80 kilometres south of Perth around Mandurah and Rockingham, with the Peel Inlet. Relief plays practically no role; only the hinterland has gentle rises.
