Around Alba Iulia and Ighiu at the foot of the Trascău mountains: a small podgorie with viticulture since Roman Apulum and the sparkling-wine centre of Alba Iulia.
Climate, site & wine
On around 500 hectares, golden, aromatic whites are made from Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală, Muscat Ottonel and Furmint. Fetească Regală thrives on loamy, fertile soil.
The high acidity of Fetească Regală suits sparkling wine; Alba Iulia is regarded as the region's centre of sparkling-wine production. Alba Iulia and Ighiu are the two centres; the vineyard area is one of the oldest in Romania.
