The Târnava valley between Blaj, Jidvei and Mediaș is Transylvania's largest white-wine district.
Climate, site & wine
Clay, marl, gravel and alluvial sand form the soils, which settlers in the 13th century already valued. Fetească Regală and Fetească Albă show floral aroma, freshness and high acidity.
Jidvei farms around 2,500 hectares in one block; alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat Ottonel, sparkling wines in the traditional method are also made. The area is believed to be the birthplace of Fetească Regală; during ripening day-night temperature swings reach around 10 °C.

Gravel and sand drain heavily — vines struggle for water, wines turn fine, light and elegant.

The climate is cool continental at about 300 metres; the Târnava Mică and Târnava Mare provide humidity, and late autumn mists slow ripening.

The Kokel valley between Blaj, Jidvei and Mediaș lies in the basin between the Târnava Mică and Târnava Mare in Alba, Sibiu and Mureș counties.
