Climate, site & wine
Devonian slate and greywacke shape the vineyards of the Untermosel. The dark rock warms up and gives the Rieslings a fine, stony spiciness. The cool climate slows ripening and preserves acidity.
Typical are slender, fresh Rieslings with citrus, apple and peach aromas, clear minerality and moderate alcohol. Spätburgunder and Müller-Thurgau play a supporting role. Well-known sites include Winninger Uhlen and Röttgen.

Slate stores heat and releases it at night — wines show wet stone, smoke and a delicate structure.
CLIMATE · Cool continental
Cool-continental climate in the deeply cut valley between Cochem and Koblenz, which separates the Hunsrück from the Eifel. The uplands partly shield the vines from wind and rain, and the river tempers extremes. The growing season is long and ripening is late.
TOPOGRAPHY · steep
Steep slate slopes on both sides of the river, cut by narrow side valleys and river meanders. Vines are planted mainly on south, southeast and southwest slopes; Burg Eltz stands in one of these side valleys, the valley of the Elzbach near Moselkern.
