Tămâioasă Românească, the "Romanian frankincense Muscat", is treated in Romania as a variety of its own and corresponds to Muscat blanc à petits grains. According to Romanian tradition its history goes back more than two millennia to Greece; Greek colonists are said to have brought it to what is now Romania. Today around 1,000 hectares of vines stand in the main wine regions, including Cotnari, Huși, Dealu Mare, Drăgășani, Pietroasele and Murfatlar.
The wines smell intensely of rose, orange blossom and fresh grapes; in Romania linden and acacia blossom are also named. They are golden-yellow to copper and reach about 12 to 12.5 % alcohol. In Drăgășani they are made dry, in Pietroasa and Cotnari medium-dry to nobly sweet. For seven to eight years in bottle they keep their aromatics; afterwards the aroma recalls honeycomb.
Dry versions pair with asparagus and fresh cheese, sweet ones with fruit tarts and blue cheese.
