Moldova Nouă lies in Caraș-Severin County in the far south-west of Romania, at the Danube gorge (Clisura Dunării), where the river cuts through the Banat highlands. The podgorie includes Moldova Nouă and the hills of Oravița. It is a small wine area on the border with Serbia.
The climate is Mediterranean-tinged, with mild winters and warm summers; the Danube and the sheltered position among the mountains contribute to this warmth. The soils are limestone and loam, which are well drained and store warmth.
Fetească Regală is grown for white wine, and Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir for red. The vineyards are small and the wines are mostly intended for the regional market. The whites are fresh, the reds warm and medium-bodied. Its position on the Danube and in the Clisura gives the podgorie a scenic setting, even though volumes remain small.
