Wine Character
Silagiu lies in Timiș County in western Romania, near Buziaș, a spa town about 35 kilometres from Timișoara. The vineyards belong to the Buziaș-Silagiu podgorie on the hill country between the Timiș and Bârzava rivers; Silagiu Hill reaches just over 320 metres and faces south and west. Between 1840 and 1850 Hungarian and German colonists settled here as winegrowers; phylloxera destroyed the vineyards in 1888.
The climate is warm temperate; the south- and west-facing slopes offer good sun exposure. The soil consists mostly of loam, which retains water and gives the wines body.
The range of varieties runs from the white Fetească Regală and Riesling Italico to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the traditional red variety Cadarcă (Kadarka). The wines are mostly fruit-driven and uncomplicated. Viticulture in Silagiu is carried mainly by small family estates.
