Oceanic climate on the broad bank of the Gironde opposite the Médoc; the large body of water moderates frost and heat. Ripening is mid-season and autumn is usually moderate. Bourg lies on the bank of the Dordogne shortly before its confluence with the Garonne to form the Gironde.

Hill country on the right bank of the Gironde and the Dordogne; because of its hills and valleys, Bourg is nicknamed the 'Petite Suisse girondine'. The citadel of Blaye (Vauban, UNESCO World Heritage since 2008) stands above the river, and vineyards are spread over knolls and slopes.

Wine Character
Blaye and Bourg lie on the right bank of the Gironde, facing the Médoc, and reach to the confluence of the Garonne and Dordogne at the Bec d'Ambès. The vineyards spread over limestone hills along the river; the citadel of Blaye, built by Vauban and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vauban's fortifications, dominates the townscape. Appellations include Côtes de Bourg, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux and Côtes de Blaye. Together they cover around 6,500 hectares.
The soils consist of limestone and clay with gravel, partly with sand. The climate is oceanic, with the Gironde tempering temperatures.
Merlot dominates the reds, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, traditionally grown in Bourg. The wines are juicy, fruit-driven and regarded as good value. In Blaye dry white wine is also made, mainly from Sauvignon Blanc. Well-known estates include Château Roc de Cambes in Bourg.
