Cérons is a small appellation on the left bank of the Garonne in the Gironde département, between Graves and Barsac. It comprises the communes of Cérons, Podensac and Illats. The area lies upstream from Bordeaux and borders the Sauternes zone; the vineyard area is small.
The vineyards stand on gravel and sand over limestone, a soil similar to that of the neighbouring Graves. The oceanic climate is mild; autumn mists in the Garonne valley encourage noble rot in good years. The gravel soils store warmth and let the grapes ripen evenly.
The main variety is Sémillon, supplemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The appellation stands for botrytised sweet white wines that are lighter and less concentrated than Sauternes. The same châteaux, for example Château de Cérons, also produce dry whites that are sold as Graves.
