Entre-Deux-Mers is the hill country between the Garonne and the Dordogne, spreading as a triangle from the outskirts of Bordeaux to the confluence of both rivers at the Bec d'Ambès and eastwards to the area around La Réole. The name refers to the tidal reaches of the two rivers, not to seas. It is one of the largest sub-regions of Bordeaux.
The landscape consists of gentle hills and plateaus. Limestone and clay alternate with gravel terraces and the sandy-silty soils known as boulbènes. The climate is oceanic and temperate; the Atlantic and the rivers bring mild winters and warm, not excessively hot summers, with rain spread through the year.
Sauvignon Blanc dominates among the white varieties, complemented by Sémillon and Muscadelle; Merlot is added for the red Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur wines. The Entre-Deux-Mers AOC is reserved for dry white wines, while reds carry the general Bordeaux appellations. Many family-run estates are characteristic, producing fresh, fruit-driven wines for everyday drinking.
