Murfatlar

Murfatlar lies in southern Dobruja west of Constanța and close to the Black Sea; the wine area includes Murfatlar, Medgidia and Cernavodă on the Danube. Dobruja is a plateau between the Danube and the Black Sea where the Greek settlers of antiquity already grew vines. The modern vineyard area was created in the 20th century, driven by the large Murfatlar winery.

The soils consist of loess and dark chernozem over limestone, in places calcareous marl. The climate is among the sunniest and driest in Romania: hot, dry summers, mild autumns and winter temperatures moderated by the sea. This long ripening period allows late harvests and high must weights.

Murfatlar became known for sweet wines from late-harvested Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Muscat Ottonel. Today it also produces dry, powerful reds from Fetească Neagră, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, and dry whites from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Names of the region include Murfatlar, Rasova, Crama Histria and Domeniul Bogdan.
