Ostrov lies in Constanța County in southern Dobruja, on the Danube opposite the Bulgarian town of Silistra. The podgorie includes Ostrov, Băneasa, Oltina and Aliman. The vineyards are on the Danube terraces, flat to gently sloping land above the river.
The climate is hot and dry, with very warm summers and low rainfall. The soils are loess over limestone, which store heat and are well drained. The Danube moderates temperature extremes near the river.
Fetească Regală, Riesling Italico and Sauvignon Blanc are grown for white wine, and Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Fetească Neagră for red. The reds are warm and fruit-driven. Besides winegrowing, the region has a tradition of table-grape cultivation that still shapes local agriculture. The wines are mostly intended for the domestic market and for regional consumption.
