Bereich Umstadt

The Umstadt district, also called the Odenwald wine island, lies apart from the Bergstraße north of the Odenwald near Groß-Umstadt in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. It covers about 78 hectares, roughly 58 hectares of white and 20 hectares of red (as of 2018). Of the district's five sites, three lie within Groß-Umstadt, the town that gives the district its name.

The soils consist mainly of quartz porphyry with a loess cover, in the Stachelberg additionally with veins of barite. The warm, well-drained slopes mostly yield clear, fresh white wines with precise acidity.

The Stachelberg in Klein-Umstadt and Kleestadt is the largest site at about 32.5 hectares; it lies at 210 to 240 metres and slopes toward the south-southeast. Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Spätburgunder are grown. The Umstädter Weinbauverein and estates such as Lohmühle represent local winegrowing.
