Marl is a mix of limestone and clay — yields structured, balanced wines with acidity backbone.

Loose sand and wind-blown sand warm up quickly and hold little water — they give aromatic, early-drinking wines with soft tannins; phylloxera-resistant.

Wine Character
Ovada and Acqui Terme lie in the south of the Monferrato in the province of Alessandria, close to the Ligurian border. The region belongs to the Alto Monferrato; the Orba and Bormida rivers cross the valleys. Acqui Terme, the Roman Aquae Statiellae, is the centre as a spa town; Ovada is the main place of Dolcetto growing, and Strevi of Moscato Passito.
The soils consist of Tertiary marls, sand and limestone. The climate is warmer than in the northern parts of Piedmont; the influence of the Ligurian coast and the Apennines has a moderating effect.
Dolcetto di Ovada is regarded as a powerful, tannic expression of the variety. Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG is an aromatic red sweet sparkling wine with rose and strawberry notes; its zone covers around 1,300 hectares in 26 communes around Acqui Terme. Barbera and Moscato are added; in Strevi a noble-sweet Passito is made from Moscato.
