Roero

The Roero lies on the left bank of the Tanaro in the province of Cuneo, north of Alba and Bra. It is a hill country scored by deeply incised ravines, the rocche, cut by the river. Important villages are Canale, Guarene, Monteu Roero, Vezza d'Alba and Castellinaldo; the vineyards are part of the cultural landscape of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

Geologically the Roero is younger than the Langhe; the soils consist mostly of sand with fossil marine deposits from the Pliocene. These loose sandy soils warm quickly and give lighter, more perfumed wines than the clayey marls across the Tanaro. The climate is continental, with warm summers, cold winters and autumn fog.

Two wines define the area: Roero DOCG from Nebbiolo, paler and more floral than Barolo, and Roero Arneis DOCG, Piedmont's most important white wine, with notes of pear and almond. Well-known producers include Malvirà, Matteo Correggia and Monchiero Carbone in Canale.
