The area between Hattenheim and Eltville is the absolute heartland of the Rheingau. Here lie Germany's most famous vineyards: the Steinberger, a walled site established by Cistercian monks of Kloster Eberbach in the Middle Ages, is considered Germany's most prominent single vineyard. The Marcobrunn in Erbach, directly on the Rhine bank, delivers earthy, powerful Rieslings. On phylloxera-free ancient soils, wines of incomparable depth and ageing potential are produced.
