Wine Character

Between Hattenheim and Eltville lies the centre of the eastern Rheingau. Hattenheim was incorporated into Eltville in 1972 and has about 268 hectares of vineyards. The slopes climb from the bank of the Rhine at the foot of the Taunus. The Steinberg was laid out in the Middle Ages by Cistercian monks from nearby Kloster Eberbach and surrounded by a wall.

The climate is mild; the Taunus shields against cold north winds, and the wide Rhine acts as heat store and reflector. The soils are deep, with loess, loam and marl as well as Taunus quartzite, retaining heat and well supplied with water.

Riesling is clearly in the foreground, with Spätburgunder alongside. Besides the Steinberg, Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen, Wisselbrunnen and Mannberg and the Erbacher Marcobrunn are well-known sites. Producers include the Hessian State Wineries at Kloster Eberbach, Schloss Schönborn in Hattenheim and Weingut Freiherr zu Knyphausen in Erbach.
