Wine Character
Hochheim am Main is the easternmost wine community in the Rheingau, lying at the confluence of Rhine and Main. Despite its off-the-beaten-path position, Hochheim is intimately linked with the history of Rheingau wine. Queen Victoria visited the estate in 1850, which was subsequently renamed in her honour (Königin Victoria Berg). The English word 'Hock' for German white wine derives from 'Hochheim'. The soils of deep loess loam over limestone produce full-bodied, earthy Rieslings with great substance. Schloss Schönborn and Freiherr zu Knyphausen are the best-known producers.
