Hochheim

Hochheim am Main lies between Frankfurt and Mainz on the north bank of the Main and is the easternmost wine village of the Rheingau. The municipality has about 241 hectares of vineyards, and its name lives on in the English word Hock for Rhine wine. A visit by Queen Victoria in 1845 raised its standing; one site carries her name as Königin-Viktoria-Berg. In the 19th and early 20th centuries Hochheim was also an important centre of sparkling wine production.

The slopes stand on deep loess loam over limestone and marl, warm and deep. The climate along the Main is mild and sunny, with the Taunus giving shelter. The wines are often fuller-bodied than those from the steep Rhine slopes.

About 80 percent of the area is planted with Riesling, around 15 percent with Spätburgunder, the rest with Kerner, Müller-Thurgau and other varieties. Well-known sites are Domdechaney, Kirchenstück, Hölle and Königin Viktoriaberg. Producers include Domdechant Werner and Künstler.
