Roter Hang

The Rote Hang is the most coveted wine-growing area in Rheinhessen – a narrow, steep slope on the Rhine between Nierstein and Nackenheim, named after its characteristic red Rotliegendes soils. These ancient Permian rock soils of red slate and sandstone are unique in Germany and produce Rieslings of extraordinary minerality, depth and ageing potential. World-famous sites such as Niersteiner Hipping, Pettenthal and Ölberg attract wine collectors from around the globe. VDP estates like Keller, Gunderloch and St. Antony are present here. The combination of steep south-facing slope, Rotliegendes soils and the Rhine's light reflection creates a unique microclimate.
