Aiud

Aiud lies in Alba County in western Transylvania, on the Mureș river, at the foot of the Trascău Mountains. The wine area includes Aiud, Turda in Cluj County and Triteni. The vineyards lie on the slopes of the Transylvanian Plateau above the river valley; they form the northernmost podgorie of the Târnava area, as the region is usually counted.

The climate is cool, with relatively late ripening; the slopes at the foot of the mountains offer protection from cold winds. The soils consist of loam and limestone, which give the wine freshness and minerality.

Mostly white varieties are grown: Fetească Regală, Fetească Albă, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling Italico. The whites from Aiud are light, acid-driven and fresh, with fruity and floral aromas. Viticulture is shaped by small estates; the region benefits from proximity to the larger wine areas of Transylvania.
