The Blackwood Valley lies in the south-west of Western Australia, in the hinterland between Margaret River and Manjimup, along the Blackwood River. The region includes Nannup, Bridgetown and Boyup Brook. Vineyards are small and spread over a wide, forested area away from the coast.
The climate is continental Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers, cold nights and wet winters. It is more continental than on the coast because the ocean's influence is weaker. The soils are gravel over loam, in places granite. They are well drained and promote even ripening.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot are grown. The Cabernets are structured and tannic, the Shiraz spicy; the Sauvignon Blancs are fresh. The region's small size and the spread across many small producers shape the picture.
