The Perth Hills lie on the Darling Scarp, the escarpment east of Perth in Western Australia. The area stretches across slopes and valleys such as the Bickley Valley, Carmel and Kalamunda at heights of roughly 200 to 400 metres and is characterised by eucalypt woodland and jarrah forest. It consists mostly of small family wineries; Millbrook in Jarrahdale is among the better-known names. Perth Hills has been a registered Geographical Indication (GI) since 1999.
The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. The elevation gives cooler nights than in the nearby Swan Valley. Bushfires are a risk.
The soils consist of lateritic gravel over clay and weathered granite. Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc are grown. The wines are fresh and fruit-driven, the Shiraz spicy and elegant, and the Chardonnays marked by lively acidity.
