Wine Character
Hohenlohe lies in the northeast of the Württemberg wine region, on the Hohenlohe Plain on both sides of the Kocher and Jagst. The wine villages around Öhringen, Pfedelbach, Bretzfeld and Neuenstein form the southern part. The overarching Kocher-Jagst-Tauber district, at around 439 hectares, is the northernmost and one of the smallest vineyard areas in Württemberg. The princes of Hohenlohe-Oehringen have shaped the area's winegrowing history.
The Kocher and Jagst have cut deeply into the Muschelkalk of the Hohenlohe Plain; permeable Muschelkalk soils prevail in the north. In the south near Öhringen there are heavy, nutrient-rich Keuper soils with good water supply. The climate is cooler and more continental than in the Neckar valley.
Varieties include Riesling, Lemberger, Trollinger and Schwarzriesling. The Verrenberg site near Öhringen, a monopole of just over 6 hectares on Keuper, remains the best known; the winery of the Princes of Hohenlohe-Oehringen and Weingut Verrenberg are among the producers.
