Wine Character
The Oberer Neckar district is the southernmost and smallest district of Württemberg and lies between Rottenburg, Tübingen and Metzingen. The vineyards are on the slopes of the Neckar valley and its side valleys, at the foot of the Albtrauf, the escarpment of the Swabian Jura. A well-known site is the Rottenburger Kreuzhalde.
The climate is cool continental, with elevations between 350 and 450 metres. Proximity to the Jura brings cooler nights and delayed ripening. The soils are shell limestone, Keuper and Lettenkeuper, which, depending on the slope, store warmth and hold water.
Schwarzriesling, Trollinger, Müller-Thurgau and Spätburgunder are grown. Schwarzriesling is the local Württemberg name for Pinot Meunier. In recent years steep sites in the Neckar valley have been revived and replanted. The wines are mostly light to medium-bodied and fresh.
