Schwarzriesling, French Pinot Meunier and in Württemberg also called Müllerrebe, is a mutation of Pinot Noir. The name Meunier (miller) refers to the leaf undersides that look dusted with flour. The variety is known as one of the three classic Champagne grapes; in Württemberg it has a long tradition and contributes to the wine culture there; smaller plantings exist in Pfalz and on the Hessische Bergstraße.

The vine buds late, which makes it less exposed to frost, and ripens early. It is robust and tolerates cool sites. The wines are light red, with cherry, strawberry and plum, with soft tannin and lively acidity. Made dry they are light and fresh, and the grape is also used for rosé and sparkling wine.

Schwarzriesling goes with cold platters, poultry, pasta and light meat dishes.
