Slate and greywacke return the heat stored by day. Spätburgunder reaches full ripeness here and shows dark fruit, spice and firm structure.
The sites around Walporzheim, Dernau and Mayschoß are known for especially expressive reds; Frühburgunder is lighter and more perfumed. Spätburgunder accounts for just under 65 percent of plantings in the Ahr valley; the Mayschoß cooperative, founded in 1868, is among the oldest in the world.

The Ahr lies in the rain shadow of the Eifel and, with around 560 mm of annual rainfall, is comparatively dry. The steep, rocky south-facing slopes absorb heat and release it slowly.
